Communications Manager – Contract

The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research (MFCR) is seeking a highly motivated Communications Manager to work in a part-time, six-to-nine-month contract position. Based in New York City and reporting to the Head of Operations and Finance, the primary responsibility of the Communications Manager will be to ensure that the image, visibility, and communications of The Mark Foundation are highly professional and appropriately reflect the exciting work the foundation undertakes. The successful candidate will coordinate day-to-day communications and manage a network of outsourced providers of written and graphic content as well as create content for multiple different media platforms. The ideal candidate will be exceptionally organized, energetic, and detail-oriented with a proven portfolio of communications work and a talent for bringing together many moving parts for polished results. This position represents an exciting opportunity to work with creative, motivated scientists both internal and external to MFCR and to have a positive impact by managing and developing a world class brand that showcases a portfolio of projects that promise to transform the lives of cancer patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute creation of website content, social media posts, marketing materials, newsletters, video productions, scientific meeting programs, and press releases
  • Manage partnerships with external communications and marketing teams
  • Serve as a point of contact for media inquiries and coordination with grantee institutions on press releases for MFCR-funded research programs
  • Monitor and respond to news sources and social media sites for material relevant to MFCR
  • Assist in the creation of an annual report as well as interim reports to the Scientific Advisory Committee and the Board of Directors


  • A bachelor’s or higher degree in life science or related field, OR a degree in journalism, media, marketing, or related field (experience in a science-related organization strongly preferred)
  • Excellent communication and writing skills with the ability to effectively communicate scientific concepts to a general audience
  • Social media savvy, including deep familiarity with multiple platforms and website development software
  • Exceptional organizational, project, and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize competing deliverables and requests
  • Collaborative mindset – capable of working cross-functionally with all stakeholders and project teams
  • End-user experience with software systems such as CRM databases, WordPress and Mailchimp
