Scientific Portfolio Manager

The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research seeks a highly motivated and organized Scientific Portfolio Manager to coordinate and manage the Foundation’s portfolio of over 100 innovative cancer research projects.  Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer, the successful candidate will be an experienced, detail-oriented portfolio/project manager who is ready to apply those skills to advance multiple scientific programs within the Foundation.  This position represents an exciting opportunity to work with creative, motivated scientists both within and external to the Foundation, and to have a positive impact by managing the portfolio of projects that will enable discoveries, platforms, and therapies with the potential to transform the lives of cancer patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead portfolio management support for The Mark Foundation
  • Monitor scientific progress of funded research projects across the portfolio, tracking deliverables and milestones
  • Assess quantitative and qualitative measurements of impact over time
  • Track project compliance with agreement terms
  • Engage with external partners, including scientific investigators, project managers, and administrative personnel, to facilitate project tracking
  • Proactively identify and address issues and work with Foundation staff and partner organizations to help implement solutions
  • Prepare and deliver communications to update Foundation staff, leadership, and Board of Directors
  • Work with scientific and operations staff to define, implement, and maintain information technology platforms for portfolio tracking and visualizations
  • Work with operations and finance staff to track spending across the portfolio and to help plan budgeting for future years
  • Work with Principal, Venture Investments and other Foundation staff to help track opportunities for new commercial ventures emanating from research grants
  • Work with the Chief Scientific Officer to help coordinate portfolio prioritization and shape portfolio strategy
  • Travel as needed to meet with grantees and other foundation partners (anticipated travel less than 15%)


  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field; master’s or advanced degree preferred
  • 5+ years of project management experience working in a pharma/biotech, academic (research or technology transfer), or nonprofit environment
  • Strong project management capabilities
  • Strong background in life sciences and oncology preferred
  • Collaborative mindset – capable of working with all stakeholders and project teams to manage the portfolio
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience managing a portfolio of research projects preferred
  • Experience with information systems such as databases and CRM preferred
