Introducing the Samuel Waxman Institute for Aging & Cancer

Earlier this month, we announced an exciting new strategic integration: the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) has joined the Mark Foundation to launch the Samuel Waxman Institute for Aging & Cancer. The New York Times DealBook was the first to share the news.

The new Waxman Institute will operate as a subsidiary of The Mark Foundation and represents a new future for SWCRF. The institute, the first in the world dedicated exclusively to the link between aging and cancer, is a natural next step in a successful multi-year partnership. It will enable us to place a critical focus on aging—the single most significant risk factor for cancer—while our broader mission to support breakthrough science across all cancer types remains unchanged.

Our Impact in Action: 2024 Annual Report

In 2024, The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research awarded more than $34.5 million in grant funding to support researchers worldwide. Our grantees have been busy, too. Last year, they published 212 peer-reviewed papers, launched seven new interventional trials, and secured $97.1 million in follow-on funding.

Recent Grantee Publications

In the second quarter of 2025, our awardees’ publications included 12 papers in top scientific journals, with topics ranging from geographic and age variations in colorectal cancer mutations to the development of covalent degraders for prostate cancer cells.

Welcoming New Mark Foundation Team Members

This summer, we added two talented new members to the Mark Foundation team. Please join us in welcoming them!

Amaia Lujambio, PhD, Scientific Director

Amaia Lujambio came to The Mark Foundation from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where she was a tenured Associate Professor specializing in liver cancer research through the development of precision mouse models. Amaia holds a BS in Biology from the University of Navarra (Spain) and a PhD in Molecular Biology from the Autonoma University of Madrid (UAM) and the Spanish National Cancer Institute (CNIO).

Meredith Henning, Grants & Data Operations Coordinator

Meredith Henning is a global health and nonprofit professional who previously supported business development teams at Save the Children, Pathfinder International, and Management Sciences for Health. Meredith holds an MPH from The George Washington University and a BS in Policy, Planning, and Development from the University of Southern California.
