Three Mark Foundation Community Members Elected to the National Academy of Sciences

The National Academy of Sciences recently announced the election of 120 new members, recognizing their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Among those elected are three individuals from The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research community.

We are proud to celebrate the accomplishments of these outstanding individuals.

Corey Abate-Shen, PhD, Columbia University
Corey Abate-Shen is co-principal investigator of The Mark Foundation Center for Lineage Plasticity. An expert in genitourinary cancers, Abate-Shen’s work has led to the identification of new biomarkers for early detection, as well as advances in cancer prevention and treatment. The Center for Lineage Plasticity’s work builds upon research that Abate-Shen and co-investigators conducted through a previous Endeavor Award

Ali Shilatifard, PhD, Northwestern University
Ali Shilatifard is the recipient of an ASPIRE Award presented in partnership with the DeGregorio Family Foundation and the Torrey Coast Foundation. Dr. Shilatifard’s research focuses on esophageal cancer and identifying druggable vulnerabilities in cancer cells. His ASPIRE award-supported project explores the potential of the drug pemetrexed for treating a subset of esophageal cancer cases.

John Wherry, PhD, University of Pennsylvania
John Wherry is a member of The Mark Foundation Scientific Advisory Committee. His pioneering research focuses on immune exhaustion in chronic infection and cancer, particularly the role of checkpoint molecules like PD-1. He is also an investigator of The Mark Foundation Center for Immunotherapy, Immune Signaling, and Radiation at the University of Pennsylvania.

“Election to the National Academy of Sciences is one of the highest honors a scientist can receive,” said Ryan Schoenfeld, PhD, CEO of The Mark Foundation. “We are incredibly proud that three members of our community have been recognized for their groundbreaking work. Their dedication to advancing cancer research aligns perfectly with our mission, and we are thrilled to see their contributions celebrated on this prestigious stage.”
